17th October, Friday

We slept in till after 9am and had quick breakfast at the Lido before going ashore.  Again we were able to walk ashore, find our way to the bus station and buy tickets at the nearby train station, for the No. 6 bus to Castella Miramare.  We got off at the wrong stop but another bus came along 15 minutes later to take us to the end of the line at Grignano.  We then had a short uphill climb to the 19th century castle, built by Austrian Archduke Maximillian including a park with rare plants and panoramic views.

The tour of the castle was €15 pp which we thought was good value.  Amazing furnishings, paintings, antiques and an interesting history of the people who have lived here.  Returning down to the small harbour below we had a cappuccino each before the bus arrived to return to Trieste.  We walked the streets for a bit before seeking out a LiDL where David was very happy to find 500ml Perlenbacher Pils beer for €0.65 each.  Very cheap – it’s NZ$196 for 12 cans on board, compared to NZ$15.60 at LiDL. So we bought 12 and divided them between us to take back on the ship.  No problem. Each person seems to be allowed to bring a maximum of six cans on board at each shore stop.
