Mediterranean Cruise 2025 - Naples
28 October, Tuesday
Last night we had a rocky, rolling night through the Strait of Messina. We went to watch the fabulous Mart Hillen again, before heading out on the top deck around 10pm where we were lucky enough to see Stromboli put on several lava shows. This volcano has been erupting continuously for over 2000 years.
This morning we met Susan and David at 9am to go ashore (they had been to the port talk so had an idea of what to see). We first had a look around Castel Nuovo, looking around the two floors of paintings, before crossing the road to the Galleria Umberto, an impressive shopping centre under a glass-domed roof. We then found our way to the funicular which took us to the top of the hill overlooking Naples and walked to Castel Sant’Elmo. A fabulous castle with great views.
We didn’t know what we were taking on when we decided to walk back to town. Over 400 stone steps down, then negotiating down many narrow cobbled streets, shared with motorcycles, cars and other pedestrians. We certainly experienced the atmosphere of the backstreets of Naples! At the bottom we stopped at a trattoria for a Peroni and a Café Americano, before returning to the ship.
The four of us went for a soak in the hot tub and a swim in the Lido pool before dinner.
